How I Work

I work with a small number of owner-managed businesses at any one time on a retained basis - typically over focused 90-day phases.

The aim is not more activity. It’s better decisions, applied consistently over time.

Most of the work sits in a small number of areas - not as separate services, but as part of how decisions are made.

Starting the Conversation

If you’re thinking of more seriously about the future of your business - or simply want a clearer perspective - I’m always open to a conversation

  • Clarifying where the business is heading and how it competes.

This is rarely about formal plans. It’s about making deliberate choices:

    • Where to focus

    • What to prioritise

    • What not to do

Because these decisions have the greatest influence on long-term value.

  • Improving visibility on how the business actually performs.

Not just numbers - but understanding:

    • What drives profit

    • Where margins are made or lost

    • How decisions affect outcomes

  • Supporting the decisions that shape the future of the business.

    This may include:

    • Growth choices

    • Investment decisions

    • Conversation with investors, buyers or partners

  • Rather than open-ended advisory, the work is organised into focused 90-day phases.

Each phase has a clear objective - whether that’s improving financial understanding, refining strategy or strengthening the business.

At the end of each phase, we step back and decide what to do next.

  • While each situation is different, the work tends to follow a consisent progression:

    • Early stages - understanding the business properly

    • Mid-stages - improving performance and focus

    • Later stages - strengthening positioning and optionality

Over time, the aim is to move from: uncertainty to clarity to strength to flexibility

  • I work with a small number of companies at any one time to ensure depth of involvement.

In certain situations, I also invest alongside the businesses I work with - where there is strong alignment and long-term potential.

This creates a closer relationship and a shared focus on outcomes.

  • This tends to work best with owners who are:

    • Open-minded

    • Willing to challenge how things are currently done

    • Interested in building something stronger over time
